I can not tell you how excited I was to finally pick up a BlackBerry 8830. This was my first jump into the realm of being one of those BlackBerry people who are seen typing emails while driving around. However the coolness factor soon ran out once I started to participate with conference calls with other people at work.
The biggest disappointment of the 8830 World Edition was that there was so much excessive background noise overheard from my end that the majority of my calls were unintelligible. The last thing I wanted to do was to tell my wife that I just spent 500 dollars on a phone that has major communications flaws with it … flaws that could have compared to a new car not having a breaking system as a standard feature.
So after 8 months with the BlackBerry 8830, I've finally developed a poor habit that I might as well not try to shake.
You see, this phone picks up more background noise than a $ 1500 lapel microphone. If I'm sitting in a restaurant and take a call, the person on the other end can tell the following just by listening:
- The song playing over the restaurant's elevator music speakers
- How close my table is to the kitchen
- Whether or not the lady two tables away has indigestion
- My innermost thoughts and feelings
Way too much stuff picked up by the phone. So I've been forced to regularly hit mute on my phone every moment that I'm not talking. This makes the new BlackBerry 8830 World Edition feel like an old fashioned walkie talkie.
