Is There a Downside to the iPhone?

Apple did it right to create a device so unique and so simple. They are the clever masters when it came to creating iPhone. The iPhone is one of the easiest PDA phones to use, but Apple messed up in other ways, including leaving out copy and paste, shorting the memory and how much it costs with AT & T.

How could apple miss these features? Apple is forcing people to upgrade with every new device by creating a built in obsolescence. In other word, Apples says "Let's make a device with limited functionality or enough bells and whistles to get people excited and then we'll get them to upgrade by adding features which should have been in there from the start. the 2G upgrade to the 3G. The 2G did not incorporate 3G speeds, which is critical to using the Internet, for example.

Now, memory is very limiting factor. Heck, even the iPod touch goes up to 32G. 16G is pretty good for those people who do not add a lot of content, such as music and movies. Heck, one movie is easily 200M.

Apple could have allowed people to add more memory by using a microSD card. This card would have been small enough as not to interrupt the beauty of the iPhone and would have given the iPhone 3G extra "life" beyond a one year period.

And, battery life is worse than my old Treo 700p. This downside to the iPhone is really worth noting. I use my phone a lot. One day I was out of the office all day using my iPhone to primarily make calls and within about 4 hours, I was half full on the battery. What if you were listening to music and / or watching videos? There are a few products out there, which I'll discuss in another article that can help you use your iPhone more through the day.

The AT & T service is ok, but pricey. The minimum monthly cost that you can expect to spend on the iPhone on AT & T is something like $ 75. This gets you 450 voice minutes, unlimited data (which you'll want) and 200 text messages (who can live without this)? Compare to my Sprint plan it's about 30% more expensive. But, if you want this gorgeous iPhone device, it's the price you must pay.

Another big miss is the lack of copy and paste. If you are in an application that has a phone number for example that you want to put into the dialer, you can not copy that phone number into the dialer. You'll have to remember the phone # or write it down and then enter it into the dialer. I can not tell you how many times I need to copy something from one application to another so I do not forget it. Copy and paste is a basics feature that all PDA type phones should have.

I still love this device, because I'm a big photo / graphics user. And, the 320 x 320 screen can not be beat right now. But, we do live in a transient industry. If someone comes up with a similar device AND better service, you can bet I will not miss trying it out.
